Warning you, this will be a fairly long review of the book。Let's start with clearing a few things off;First, and most importantly, I highly respect the efforts of the author, any other opinions, and the book itself。 This review only consists of my own *personal* opinions。There will be *spoiler alerts* so that none of you will face an unpleasant surprise :)I started the book with average expectations: a strong female lead, a fantastic journey, and a bit of unavoidable romance between our protagon Warning you, this will be a fairly long review of the book。Let's start with clearing a few things off;First, and most importantly, I highly respect the efforts of the author, any other opinions, and the book itself。 This review only consists of my own *personal* opinions。There will be *spoiler alerts* so that none of you will face an unpleasant surprise :)I started the book with average expectations: a strong female lead, a fantastic journey, and a bit of unavoidable romance between our protagonist and some "handsome" boy she meets。 I can consider myself as an experienced YA reader, so on that note, I was not surprised by the storyline or the path the characters choose。 I have read close to 300 pages and skimmed the rest since the next chapters of the book showed very little difference in the writing style or the story。 Lastly, I don't really like DNFing books or not reading them entirely, but there are many good -and sadly bad- books out there waiting to be read。 I was disappointed because the story did not meet my expectations at all, but that doesn't mean that there aren't things to appreciate。 In summary, this book wouldn't satisfy many experienced readers but can be a good starting point for those who are interested in YA fantasy and Asian culture。 So I will be listing both pros and cons of this book, in my opinion of course, in a bullet point format。 After this long intro, let's get into the review:✨STRENGTHS✨🔹A Unique Topic and Diverse Choice of CultureOne of the reasons why I picked this book was it was inspired by Asian culture, which I find so interesting and special。 Its topic was highly uncommon as well, a tailor girl who defies the odds。 According to the synopsis, there is also a hard journey waiting for her -and thankfully that is not making a "revolution" and dragging the whole country into the war (at least in the first book)。 There are hints of magic, fantasy, and adventure as well。🔹Great Use of Symbolism and ForeshadowingThis year I started getting advanced literature lessons, which really helped me understand the books in more depth。 I am aware that YA books are not a part of the literature where writing techniques and styles diverse or enhanced that much, but you will definitely come across foreshadowing and the use of numerology in this book。 I assume the book is influenced mostly by the Chinese culture, though I thought it would be closer to Japanese culture judging by the book cover。 The number of the staircases, for instance, was taken from Chinese numerology。 88 steps leading to the palace symbolizing wealth and prosperity, and the 49 steps leading down the dungeons representing death。 Also, the number and the quality of the challenges (first for the body, second for the mind, and third for the soul) aligns with the meaning of number 3 in Chinese culture, which represents the three important stages of human life: birth, marriage, death。🔹Absolutely Magnificent Book CoverI am one of those people who believe that cover and the content should be one as together - cover is of great importance since it would be the first impression one would get of the book。 I must say that the cover art played a great role in me choosing this book to read despite my growing TBR pile。 So I really appreciate the cover artist(s)'s great work。✨IMPROVEMENT POINTS✨🔹Descriptive Language UseWhen you are reading a book like this - a book in a new fantasy world, which you expect worldbuilding from - you expect to see more descriptions of the environment, the surroundings of the character, and the significant events。 However, I believe that some of the milestones (i。e。 the first use of the scissors, gathering Amana's children, sewing Amana's dresses, etc。) were rushed and not given as many details as I wished there was。 There were more described scenes, but I wished those would be scenes related to our protagonist's journey rather than sexual interaction。🔹TransitionTransitions between events and scenes were missing。 Especially when Maia decides to use the scissor。 She insists on not using them for days, then, though she still has time, she suddenly chooses to use the scissors, with a decision made in a second。 Another example, when she is freed from the dungeon -- what happens? There is a blank between the ending of the first part and the start of the second part。 What I am saying is that it felt like there were missing parts, so adding a little more to those parts would have strengthened the story much more。🔹Predictability and RepetitivenessWe can handle this issue in two aspects: 1。 the story was repetitive and predictable in itself, 2。 the story was repetitive of the YA culture and therefore predictable。 1。 First interactions of Maia and Edan were based on repetitive dialogues, I have read the same dialogue 5-6 times in 130 pages。 And their approach, later on, was too。 This is an issue that can be solved easily by adding a little more diversity in their conversations or widening the characters' mindsets。 As for its predictability, there were bits of foreshadowing (i。e。 the hawk's eyes), but the main reason was the storyline being basic and very similar to many other YA novels, which we will discuss right below。2。 This issue, however, is harder to solve。 I understand that this storyline (meet-tease-driven together-fell in love) is popular, liked by many readers, but it is also overused。 That kills the uniqueness of the books and makes them all similar。 This similarity causes the plots to become easily predictable by readers。 To get over it is harder and riskier to do, but unless authors get out of their comfort zones and the formulas, there will be no diversity or success for the future of the YA literature。🔹Character ArcSadly, there was very little character development throughout the book。 Our protagonist's aims slightly shifted from reaching her own goals as an imperial tailor to saving her lover。 Moreover, the characters were mostly flat。 Our protagonist could have been inspected from many points of view, maybe as a daughter, a sister, a tailor, or even a survivor, but the only part of her that was mentioned in depth was her relation with Edan。*SPOILER ALERT* Actually, one of the things that I am most disappointed about is Edan's character。 According to the book, he has, at least supposed to had, a conscience and an accumulation of knowledge and experience of over 500 years。 However, his actions were only as mature as a 15-year-old boy who still couldn't get over his puberty。 He knew the consequences of having a relationship with Maia, yet he has done actions leading her to believe that there could be a safe relationship between the two。 He kisses her and tells her that they cannot be together, but then they make out。 Learn to keep it in your pants dude!🔹WorldbuildingDoesn't really exist。 We only get to have a glimpse of the world our protagonist lives in and never an in-depth picture of what has been going on (i。e。 Five Winter's War and its effects on the public in general, other cities, the culture of the nation, religious practices and how the protagonist feels about it, etc。) There is a very limited perspective, more like a bubble, shaped around the main character。 For instance, the few things I know about their culture is that women are underestimated, they have a mother goddess and a Great Spice Road。 Other than that, I really don't know how the culture around her affected her, or if the dresses she makes are influenced by their traditions - if they have any。 Briefly, the book lacks worldbuilding and needs improvement。🔹ConsistencyOne of the biggest problems of fantasy and fiction in general。 Creating a world is no easy job, and preserving its consistency is even harder。 There were many things that don't make any sense。 There are some major ones I spotted, so I'll go with them。 *SPOILER ALERT*1。 Maia's Gender In the very beginning of the book, we see that Minister comes, talks, and rejects Maia。 Later on, we witness Maia cutting her hair, wearing her brother's clothes, and faking a limp to look like a boy。 She also deepens her voice - somehow。 And till she arrives at the palace no one recognizes her as a girl。 It is NOT possible for someone who had seen your face minutes ago to not recognize you just because you get a haircut。 Let's say that the minister was uncareful, what about the others? There is no way that Edan just randomly decided to hide her secret。 What about the period between her arrival and meet with Edan?2。 Maia's Hair As mentioned above, she cut her hair at shoulder length before going to the palace。 After the trial and a few weeks spent with Edan during the journey she claims that her hair was long enough to braid now。 Let's have a look at the growing capacity of hair: Hair is capable of growing a maximum of 1。7 centimeters - round to 2 - in a month。 She hasn't even spent a full three months, meaning that her hair grew 6 more centimeters (even that would be a miracle) which is close to 4 fingers。 So either her hair was already long enough to braid or she lies。 3。 ClimbingIt was never hinted that Maia had an extreme physical strength。 Moreover, we have reason to believe she is not that strong enough。 Sewing that much definitely would have to strengthen her arms and hands but not as much as a mountain climber I assume。 Without having any proper training, it is really hard to believe that she climbed that mountain herself。4。 ScissorsI get that she has *magic* scissors, but they are scissors。 How are you able to sew, stitch, embroider or paint with them? 。。。more

3。5 // This was an inventive and compelling YA fantasy - I love a gender undercover story, and overall the story was compelling, but it also glossed over things strangely and, IMO, the characters lacked strong voice。 I almost think that if this had been written in the third person it would solve this for me, because I felt like we didn't get any of the internal POV that first person lends you, but also we didn't get any more information about our characters that an separate narrator could have p 3。5 // This was an inventive and compelling YA fantasy - I love a gender undercover story, and overall the story was compelling, but it also glossed over things strangely and, IMO, the characters lacked strong voice。 I almost think that if this had been written in the third person it would solve this for me, because I felt like we didn't get any of the internal POV that first person lends you, but also we didn't get any more information about our characters that an separate narrator could have provided, like body language, etc。 Basically I felt that the characters lacked strong personality, and the story just happened to them - though that story was definitely interesting。Along those lines, while I found the prose gripping, it seemed that often things got forgotten。 Lines got repeated almost verbatim chapters apart, and not as a callback。 In a fight scene a character stabs someone, and I found myself worrying that they had lost their weapon because it was never mentioned after plunging into the villain - except it's just magically back after the fight is over。 Another example, early on we are told via gossip that two side characters were actually lovers。 This is afterward taken as gospel and we jump straight into the narration seeing them as tragic star crossed lovers, despite them barely/never actually acting that way。 Basically, this story wove a great tapestry, but the details often were lost when you look more closely。Also, maybe I was missing something, but the proper nouns drove me crazy。 Why did they all sound so different from each other?? Some were as clearly Chinese as the book itself, but many were not at all, with no rhyme or reason seemingly to which were what。 Great example, the country itself was called A'landi - basically no other proper noun in the entire series has that apostrophe construction in it。 This is definitely a nit pick, but the linguistics of this book just felt horrible inconsistent and that was definitely a problem for me only。All that to say, I definitely immediately went to borrow the second book from my library。 I really enjoyed the overall weaving of myth and pseudo-historic characters, and I felt like the plot did a great job of surprising me and pulling me along (even while characters did not - who didn't call that romance from the first second??)。 。。。more

This book seems like it was written straight out of Disney。 Lol。 The characters, the setting and the magic/ enchantments would be wonderful in animation。 Also uh let me express my astounding appreciation on how Edan’s character was written because all his expressions of his adoration for Maia was so endearing (and witty) in a way that it didn’t make me cringe。 Love him。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I like the storyline, and the lore, but I was frustrated by the convenient plot devices that would only appear when needed - example: the acorns, from what I remember there was no mention of acorns in the many telling of the mythos behind the three dresses until Maia needs a way to capture the sunlight。
